What is a fungal nail infection?
Fungal nail infections are very common. Nails can turn yellow, white or brown, become thick and crumbly, and may lift away from the skin.
Fungus loves warm, damp places, such as shoes, socks and changing rooms.
What happens at your appointment
- 1We check your nails and talk about how long they've been affected.
- 2We gently reduce and file the thickened nail, which makes it more comfortable and helps treatments work better.
- 3We give you advice on treatment products and simple habits that help stop it spreading.
Common questions
How long will it take to clear?
Fungal nails clear slowly, because the healthy nail has to grow out. It can take many months, and we'll support you along the way.
Can it spread?
Yes, to other nails or to the skin (athlete's foot). Keeping feet dry and changing socks daily helps.
Should I see my GP?
See your GP if the infection is spreading, painful, or if you have diabetes.
Do you do home visits?
Yes, for NG8, NG9 and NG10 postcodes, Monday to Friday. Please call us to arrange one.
